10 Ways to Lower Retail Security Costs

Wed January 18, 2012

The cost of retail security is of concern to almost every business. Here are a few ways to reduce shrink without destroying your profit margins:

  1. Train employees to be observant. Simply having cashiers and other front-end personnel to thoroughly check carts, look at purses, and otherwise observe what customers are coming through with should catch several items per day that people "forget" to put on the counter.

  2. Hire a greeter. Retailers don’t hire people to give customers a friendly welcome just to be nice. Studies have shown that even this little bit of personal attention will make people much less likely to steal things.

  3. Tethering electronics and other valuable items that are on display. Anti-theft devices likeretractable cables, brackets and alarms allow you to show off things like cell phones and tablets while keeping people from pocketing them.

Securing down electronics with products like those made by Sennco is one of the more unique types of retail theft prevention. It is a big step up from the days where everything had to be kept in display cases. By keeping products out where people can see them, you'll increase sales as well as reduce shrink.

  4. Install anti-theft scanners at public doors. These devices beep when someone tries to walk out with an item that hasn't been paid for. Make sure nearby employees are trained to actually respond to the beeps.

  5. Install surveillance cameras, or at least make it look like you did. Would-be thieves won't be too eager to steal if they see one of the familiar black bubbles on the ceiling right over the items they were thinking of taking.
